Issue:
PC crashed, or power went out. Upon boot, the system complains that System32\HAL.DLL is missing.

Solution:
Do NOT replace HAL from the install CD, but do boot from the install CD.

1. Insert the MS XP installation CD.

2. Switch the PC to boot from CDROM as the first device in BIOS, if needed.

3. Press any key once when the message to press any key to boot from CD message appears.

4. Wait for the Installation menu to display; take the Rebuild (R) option, by pressing R.

5. At the C:\ prompt, enter the following command:
chkdsk /r
Note: The R does the F (fix) flag and also locates bad sectors and rebuilds. Wait a LONG time.

6. Wait for it to finish.

7. Rerun chkdisk again with either the F or R flag if errors were found. (Errors are typically found when you have corruption.)
chkdsk /r

8. Still at the C:\ prompt, repair the boot.ini with the following commands.
bootcfg /rebuild
a. At the Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All), answer Y and press <enter>.
b. At the Enter Load Identifier, enter your version of XP. e.g. Windows XP Professional and press <enter>.
c. At the Enter OS Load options, enter: /Fastdetect and press <enter>.

9. Type exit to quit the Recovery Console command line.

10. Eject the CD, and watch the reboot. Pray and thank the Maker it works.
