Issue:
When running applications, files cannot be saved/updated to various locations on hardrive once user is running Vista instead of XP.
It is unexpected as user is a local administrator on the workstation.

Common places:
C:\
C:\temp\

Workarounds/Things to Check:

If an application, rewrite the code to use the current user's private temp folder. Hopefully, you are the developer, yes?

If you are an administrator on the box, you should be able to change the ownership rights.
File --> Right click --> Properties --> Security --> Advanced.
Change the file's permissions to include you (or take ownership) if you are the only one accessing the file. Otherwise, change the permission settings so that all local users can update the file.

You can turn off the User Account Control. However, this will turn off this Vista "improvement".
Start --> Control Panels --> Accounts --> User Account Control (UAC).
