Overview:
Custom Virtual Hosting:
If you created or had us create a custom virtual machine (VM) server(s)/host(s) for you, you will have your own machine(s) to manage, or if desired, we can assist managing it with you using your block of support time.
The VM includes:
- A private network (VPC) subnet
- A firewall appliance
- The VM(s) requested
- - Typically, we create the VM(s) from templates we have available (e.g. Ubuntu, CentOS, RockyOS, etc.)
- - The VMs will already have the OS installed, with an admin account and password, which is given to you.
Domino Hosting:
Mindwatering hosted Domino accounts are set-up for you with:
- Cross certificates as appropriate
- Minimum 2 peer Domino application servers on which your apps will be hosted which will be on two separate Internet connections
- At least one administrative ID either cross-certified or created for you
- A folder in which your apps or mail are placed. If you uploaded the apps to us, we place them there. Otherwise, you can create replicas up to the Domino servers and into your folder yourself.
Shared Wordpress/HTML/Web Site Hosting:
Mindwatering hosted web site accounts are set-up for you with:
- Domain
- Domain Email Account(s)
- Web Site Account(s)
For each Web Site, there is at minimum:
- SSH credentials (user account id and its password)
- Folder where these credentials have access to place the web site
If you asked for Wordpress, you also have at minimum:
- Database credentials (user account id and its password)
- Database created with access via those credentials
- A Wordpress administrative id and password given to you
SFT/SSH:
Mindwatering hosted web sites are typically set up with SFTP/SSH access. If using a terminal account, it means that you can either:
- remote into the server (e.g. ssh myadminid@serverhost.mindwatering.net) and then scp files within the terminal
or
- Use a SFTP client (e.g. FileZilla, WSFTP, etc.) to transfer files using your admin ID and password.
If using SFTP connection, your transfer is SSH via port 22.
If using FTP connection, your transfer is FTP via port 21. (Typically "active mode" or passive mode disabled.)
SFTP is secure-FTP. It actually means FTP via SSH.
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol.
SSH stands for Secure Shell Protocol.
SFTP/SSH is secured with transit encryption on port 22. FTP is insecure on port 21.
Although People call it FTP still, we are almost always using SFTP/SSH to transfer files.
- Wordpress
The majority of our clients in the shared space are running WordPress. Once WordPress is installed, SFTP transfers are not as common for site updates. SFTP is still regularly used for large files or non-image presentation or other digital files.
Mindwatering can pre-load Wordpress to your hosting/site as part of our set-up, or any time afterwards using your available block of support time.
SFTP/SSH Generic Instructions:
As there are multiple SFTP clients available, we will give you the information you need to enter into your FTP client's host connection profile. Use the following sample information as a sample on configuring your FTP access with your client of choice.
- Protocol:
This is typically SFTP/SSH on port 22.
e.g. SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol / SSH
- Host:
This is either your domain name, or one of Mindwatering's shared server's hosts names
- If you have your own server, it will the FQDN (full domain/host name of the server). e.g. Ours is mindwatering.com or www.mindwatering.com.
- If you are using a shared service, it will the FQDN of the shared server given you. e.g. serverhost.mindwatering.net.
- Login:
This is your username or ID which you use to login to your FTP site. Mindwatering gave this to you. Generally it is a variation of your business name and and account name.
(e.g. MindwateringAdminID)
- Password:
This a letter and numbers that make up a phrase or code to enter along with your login name. This is always case sensitive.
(e.g. !Thanks2haveU1)
- Remote Directory:
This is usually "web" as we set your FTP folder one folder "up" or "above" or web site contents folder which is generally named web.
/web
Note: Your website is not www.mydomainname.com/web, just www.mydomain.com.
- Transfer Settings:
If using classic, insecure FTP, then you may need to tweak the Transfer Settings.
Passive Transfers / Passive Firewall / PASV:
This functionality allows a FTP client behind a (double) firewall at work or home to still connect to a FTP. Passive Transfer uses non port 21 high numbered local ports but often does not work well over the Internet.
