Compression
Compression helps to get all of your levels as high as they can be before they clip and give you more sound to work with when you go to mix.
Sonic Picture
Each instrument has a specific frequency range where it sounds it's best. Most of the time, if you take out the frequencies you don't need on one instrument, it will leave room for another one to take that place in the sonic picture that you are creating. If you use the blue dot in the 6 band to "sweep for the best frequencies, you'll start getting the hang of it pretty fast.
Noise Elimanation
Use a gate to keep sound from coming in when she is not singing. (This works with compression to keep the signal to noise ratio low.)
Steps to Put Together
Before you record:
1. Set the gain on the mic
2. Make sure you get your compression right first.
3. Set your gate next above the noise and below the voice. (Note: Set the curve to 1.1 to allow the gate to be fuzzy and less severe in it's muting.)
4. Make or buy a pop screen (see instructions below)
5. Use foam batting to dampen the room
After you record:
1. Choose your track part (or parts of tracks to use)
e.g.
Get a whole bunch of parts and start pulling out the things that you don't need... say you have two different tracks that have a solo at the same place... you just hit the solo button on each one and find out which one is going to be the best or you can take one for the first part of the solo and the other for the second part and do a crossfade between them.
2. Set your EQ in the mix.
Go to your Rennasance 6 band Eq and drop out everything under 100 with the orange dot. Then build your bass into the mix with the yellow one next to it.
Then cut out the booming frequencies with the green one and then drop the blue one down below the line and move it back and forth until you get a good sound then with the last two to the right you can add or subtract the simbilance in the high end.
Making a Pop Screen
Take a clothes hanger and stretch some old panty hose over a frame then attach that in front of the mic it's just as good as a "store bought" pop screen. Do about 2 to 4 layers of panty hose, ie. two on each side.
Damping the Room
Buy use cheap foam mattresses. Build a booth around the vocalist or player using the matresses.
