Issue:
PC workstation boot hangs on "Preparing Network Connection".
Causes:
This hang occurs when:
- A "slave" server cannot contact its AD policy server
- Two NICs exist in a box w/o hosts file to pre-populate the server's address
- A single server setup w/DNS and as the AD controller (PDC)
Solution:
- For the 1st case, fix whatever is the issue where the "slave" server cannot get policy/access info from the "controller".
- For the 2nd and 3rd cases, both are a chicken and egg issue where the server cannot find out where itself is because neither DNS or AD can tell it. Both of these issues are fixed by editing the host file and adding the FQDN and the host name to the hosts file.
Note:
This can also happen if you change the IP address and forget to update the IP address in the hosts file before you reboot. Also, to fix the hosts file, you have to give up on the current login, power off the server and then go into safe mode w/o networking and edit the hosts file. Then restart the server again.
