Article on sliming down a NT 4.x Server used when used solely as an IIS web server.

Go to:
Control Panel --> Services

Required Services:
  • Event Log
  • License Logging Service
  • Windows NT LM Security Support Provider (secure/password protected FrontPage webs)
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service
  • Windows NT Server or NT Workstation
  • WWW Publishing Service

May Be Required:
  • FTP Publishing Service (if you are using FTP)
  • Gopher Publishing Service (required if site has gopher info)
  • Plug & Play (Recommended, but not always required)
  • RPC Locator (required if doing remote administration from machine)
  • Server Service (can be stopped, but must be restarted to run User Manager)
  • Telephony Service (Required if you have UNC virtual roots or dialup)
  • Workstation (Optional if you have UNC virtual roots)

Three below only necessary if user at station wants to use "Find All Services" option in the Internet Service Manager (ISM).

NWLink NetBIOS
WINS Client (TCP/IP)

Not Requried:
  • Alerter
  • ClipBook Server
  • DHCP Client (unless the server is using a dynamically assigned IP - almost never)
  • DHCP Server (unless is a server)
  • Messenger
  • Net Logon
  • Network DDE & Network DDE DSDM
  • Network Monitor Agent
  • Simple TCP/IP Services
  • Spooler
  • TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
  • UPS (unless using one)
  • WINS Client (TCP/IP)
  • NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible Transport (Not required unless you don't have TCP/IP or another transport like IP)
