Issue:
Opened PC Illustrator AI file. Cannot edit text in text boxes. All layers are all visible and unlocked.
Solution A:
If from Illustrator 10 or earlier, choose Type --> Legacy Text --> Update All Legacy Text
Solution B:
Do Cmd+H, to toggle Hide Edges. The previous person probably wanted to see their text without the line markings so you can select the text.
