You created a Domino.Doc document using the web, the API, or the Notes Client. When you try to edit or view the document on the web afterwards, you receive an error. The document loads correctly if using the Notes Client. So the attachment is stored correctly, but cannot be loaded from the web.

Most likely you have an issue with an illegal /special character to the web server or to the web browser. In other words, you used a character that either the server or the browser cannot support (at least in a filename of a document).

The error message you get usually shows up as one of the following:
  • 404 Message, that the file cannot be found/located
(possible if you entered two spaces in the filename)
  • HTTP Server, Unknown Command Exception
(this is a server side error if you used a character used by the system, like an exclamation point in the filename)
  • The document name or path is invalid
(usually a character in the document that the server cannot translate for the browser)

Problem
You create a document in Domino.Doc that contains an attachment whose file name includes one of the following characters:

# (pound sign)
% (percent sign)

When you
view that file in a Web browser, the following error appears and the file is not displayed:
"'parent.Bottom' is not an object."
If you answer 'No' to the question 'Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?', an "HTTP Web Server: Item Not Found Exception" error is displayed on the Domino server console and in the window that informs the user that the document is loading

In addition, users who
edit this document can experience problems similar to the following:
  • Application errors that shut down the Notes client
  • Unusual errors in the browser such as follows:
"Error obtaining the document from the Domino.Doc Server", followed by
"The document name or path is not valid..."

Solution
This issue was reported to Lotus Quality Engineering and has been addressed in Domino.Doc 3.1.

Problem
Your Domino.Doc server, any language, resides on an English operating system. Using a Web browser, you create, save, and check-in a document with a DBCS attachment. When you edit this document, the following error occurs:

"Error obtaining the document from the Domino.Doc Server."

Solution
This issue has been reported to Lotus Quality Engineering. This is a core Domino issue, not specific to Domino.Doc. When working in a multi-lingual environment (for example, English server and Japanese client), you must use attachments whose file names belong to the character set of the server. If the server is English, therefore, you should attach only files with English (ASCII) characters in the file name.

Supporting Information
File names are native in each platform. Domino or Notes depend on the operating system's codepage for encoding file names.

Problem
You create a document in Domino.Doc that contains an attachment whose file name includes an exclamation point (!). When you view that file in a Web browser, the following error appears and the file is not displayed:

"HTTP Web Server. Unknown Command Exception."
When you edit that document from a Web browser, the ODMA application launches, you log in, and the following error occur:

"HTTP Web Server. Unknown Command Exception."

If you click OK to clear that error, then the following error appears:

"The document name or path is invalid."

Solution
This issue has been reported to Lotus Software Quality Engineering; however, at this time there are no plans to address it in the current product series.

To avoid the errors, do not attach files with a file name that includes an exclamation point if Web browsers will be accessing the document. Or, use the Notes client to view and edit the document when the file name includes an exclamation point.

Supporting Information
This issue occurs on Domino R5 servers. It could not be reproduced on a Domino 4.6.7 server as the 4.6 server does not support the use of the exclamation point for URL commands.

Problem
You create a new document in Domino.Doc using a Web browser client. In the Attach File field, you type in the wrong name for the file attachment; the file you enter does not exist. You save the file, but do not see any error message warning that the file does not exist. The document is checked in without an attached file, with the Content field set to "Notes."

Solution
This issue has been reported to Lotus Software Quality Engineering as an enhancement request to modify this functionality. To minimize any errors when entering the file name, you should click the Browse button to find the file.

Supporting Information
Since no error message is generated, users who create and check in documents are often unaware that the document was not created as they expected. Because the Content field for the document is set to "Notes," you cannot easily go back and change the document to include an attachment. The simplest method of correcting the problem is to delete the document and start over.

Problem
When you enter certain characters for the file name of a document to be saved to a Domino.Doc 3.5 library, the following error occurs:

"The above file name is invalid."

You are working within an integrated application, such as Microsoft Word.

Solution
When you save a new document to a Domino.Doc library in an integrated application, the file name cannot include any of the following characters:

\ / : * ? " < > |

In Domino.Doc 3.5 when you create documents in an integrated application (from the ODMA interface), you have the same limitations for document titles as for files in the Windows 32 file system. The Domino.Doc 3.5 User's Guide contains the information above on these character limitations to address the issue reported to Lotus Software Quality Engineering.

When you initially save the document, the document title reflects the file name. You can change the document title in the Profile when you check in the document. Or, if you create the Domino.Doc document from another interface, such as a Web browser or the Notes client, you are not confined by this limitation and can include these characters in the document title initially.
